Essentially every aspect of professional astronomy in Canada is supported through taxes, from astronomers’ salaries to the research tools currently in use or proposed in the LRP. Three years after IYA2009 are citizens more aware of Canadian astronomy? Have some of the harsh criticisms abated of communications by professional astronomers presented in the February 2008 JRASC Editorial (102, pps 2-3)? What steps are available to improve public understanding and appreciation of astronomy, and science in general, in today’s environment? I hope to stimulate a lively, constructive discussion.
